During my own research on biography at the Mind Brain Education Program of Harvard University, I was able to establish that merely the existence of the ‘lock’ entails a clearly heightened haunting motivation for the corresponding ‘keys’. So, as long as perception and experience patterns are not treated and processed consciously, our brains tend towards seeking similar things again simply as a ‘preservation and protection function’. Freud called this the compulsion to repeat, but I myself would prefer to comprehend it as the neuro-psychological consequence of our brain’s functional processing mechanism.
Normally, it is rather elderly people that tend to concern themselves with their biographies.
In his essay ‘Biographical Work – between Memory and Therapy’, Professor Rainer Hirt describes that the future seems to vanish for elderly persons and thus interest in the past appears to be something worthwhile.
At this point, why do we not deliberately change perspective for once and learn in the opposite direction?
Let us make negative aspects from the past deliberately ‘vanish’ by integrating them, and let us feel concern with our futures to be worthwhile.
And this very thing provides freedom from the ‘key-lock principle’, veritable freedom of choice and hence the prerequisite for authentic self-leadership!
